Suite Shed, unique accessible space

Suite Shed From $300
Launceston, TAS per night

Relax and unwind at the Suite Shed, nestled in a peaceful old orchard garden in Launceston. This charming replica Tasmanian shed has been transformed into a warm, self-contained guest suite with a wheelchair-accessible bathroom and kitchenette. Enjoy your private deck beneath the apricot tree, or curl up on the day bed with a book or Netflix.

Designed by alsoCAN architects and featured in Dwell magazine, the Suite Shed blends rustic charm with thoughtful contemporary design. Timber boards and weathered metal have been exposed internally, while fully insulated walls and roofing create a warm, quiet and comfortable retreat.

Inside, the guest suite includes a living area, bedroom and accessible bathroom. A queen-sized daybed in the lounge can be closed off to create a second sleeping space. Shelves are stocked with games, Australian flora and fauna books, Tasmanian walking guides and local travel information to help plan your adventures.

Sleep soundly on award-winning Sleeping Duck mattresses with Dunlopillo latex pillows.

The Suite Shed was designed as an inclusive, sensory-friendly space with accessibility in mind. Features for guests with low vision include sensor lighting, handrails, a talking microwave and induction cooktop, while the kitchenette and bathroom are wheelchair accessible. An egg chair offers a peaceful place to retreat and unwind.

Set behind an existing residence on one of the largest blocks in this inner-urban neighbourhood, the property feels wonderfully secluded while remaining within walking distance of Launceston’s city centre.

Relax on your private deck overlooking rambling gardens and old fruit trees. In summer, you may spot Sulphur-crested Cockatoos visiting the walnut tree outside the bathroom window, positioned high for both privacy and treetop views.

You may also meet the two resident Rough Collies, Cienna and her daughter Minnie. Friendly and affectionate, they enjoy meeting guests but are equally happy to stay with us if you prefer a quieter stay.

The Suite Shed is tucked away behind a Californian bungalow on a large inner-city block in Launceston. You have exclusive use of the self-contained suite, private deck and separate pathway to the street.

The deck overlooks a spacious backyard filled with old fruit trees and views toward the hills beyond the North Esk River. A temporary fence between the deck and garden allows our dogs safe access to the yard without disturbing your privacy.

You’re welcome to close the gate and remove the temporary fence if you’d like to enjoy the backyard or spend time with the dogs. Please note the backyard itself is not wheelchair accessible, although the suite and deck are designed for accessibility.

In season, you can even pick fresh apricots straight from the tree beside the deck.

Note:

Please do not book if you have allergies to dogs or animal fur. There are two long-haired Rough Collies who shed generously. While they do not share your accommodation, some fur may occasionally find its way into outdoor areas. As the Suite Shed is set within a garden, you may also spot visiting possums, neighbouring cats and the occasional beneficial insect enjoying the space alongside you.

To maintain the rustic “shed” feel while providing a practical non-slip surface for wheelchair and ambulant guests, the concrete floor is intentionally left unsealed. It may feel slightly sandy underfoot and can mark easily, but it is cleaned thoroughly and designed to feel relaxed rather than polished.

The LED strip lighting beneath the handrails operates on motion sensors to assist guests with low vision navigating at night. If preferred, these lights can also be switched off manually.

The Suite Shed has been carefully insulated with a new roof over the original structure, insulated external wall layers and double-glazed windows to keep the space warm and comfortable year-round.

As temperatures change, the insulated metal roof may occasionally make gentle expansion and contraction sounds. Many guests barely notice it, but we like to mention it for transparency.
